Why we believe so strongly in Waste Junkies

Let's face it: we live in a fantasy world, convinced that the only way is up. We measure economic growth as the sum of the value of what we produce. So we produce as much as we can and disregard the consequences. This is what we call ‘progress’. The outcome? We are overwhelmed by the waste we produce.

Let’s look at some numbers:

  • 99% of the products we buy last less than 6 months.
  • 30% of our food is wasted.
  • 40% of the clothes we produce are never sold or used.
  • 50% of the medicine we manufacture ends up as trash.
  • 2 billion tons of solid waste is produced each year, and that number is rising fast.

What we call ‘economic growth’ today is essentially industrial production output. That is way too limited considering the complex societies we live in. Yet every major decision made anywhere around the world is underpinned by its potential to contribute to this type of ‘economic growth’. The resulting damage to the world we live in - and therefore to mankind - is immeasurable, to the extent that it threatens our survival.

On top of the environmental damage, economic growth as we define it today, leads to severe disruption of societies in every part of the world. It feeds inequality and it triggers violent organised crime, destabilising regions, countries and entire continents. Billions of dollars are spent on lobby groups to keep things as they are and continue adding to the problems. Around the globe industries consciously avoid taking responsibility and use PR tactics to shift the blame to consumers.

But while it seems hard to turn the tide, there are people who work tirelessly to come up with alternatives to the current gospel of economic growth. Some, like Jørgen Randers as co-author of The Limits to Growth, have been propagating change for more than five decades. The chorus of people designing and embracing a new narrative is growing and spreading around the globe. The alternatives they offer are viable and within reach. They bring a much needed spark of hope to a dire situation that affects us all.

While Waste Junkies paints a gruesome picture of where we stand today, its key message is about hope and change. How can we design an economy that hits the sweet spot and meets the needs of all, within the limits of our planet? After watching Waste Junkies, people will go to bed knowing that something can be done.

What Motivates us to produce Waste Junkies?

When creator Thomas Loudon started working on this film, his initial idea was to investigate waste as a topic. In the course of his research, he found that the real issue was not waste but humanities addiction to the gospel of economic growth.  In fact, Thomas became convinced that it is high time for a major turnaround at the systemic level to mend our totally broken economic system.

Thomas decided to commit himself fully to the cause. As an investigative journalist, the only way he knows how is through storytelling.

Since then others have joined him in his quest. High-end documentary  film production house Scenery immediately saw the potential and jumped on board. An amazing team of researchers, investigative journalists, scientists, movie directors, cinematographers, sound technicians, editors, producers and post producers was formed. And last but not least, highly reputed partners pledged their support and started contributing their network and knowledge. In the end, our current definition of economic growth is nothing but a story, designed not even very long ago. A bad story, as it turns out. The team behind Waste Junkies is highly motivated to replace it by a a new narrative of a healthy economy on a thriving planet.

Synopsis

From deep inside the smallest cells of our body all the way to outer space: human waste is everywhere. As we follow the path of waste from its origin during the extraction of natural resources to its final destination, we unravel its mysterious course. We reveal the dark world of organised crime and its secretive vested interest in waste management. Meeting whistleblowers, journalists and politicians, we debunk the myths behind the recycling industry and we follow the money in Big Corporations willing to spend millions on lobbyists to create a waste-laundering scheme that results in an ever dirtier world. Leading scientists show us how waste has literally become part of our bodies, affecting us all the time, every day, even before we are born. As we tell the story it becomes increasingly clear that the main driving force behind all this waste production is our insatiable urge to generate ever more economic growth. Change is a must and change is absolutely possible. Ancient wisdom points us in directions that can help us find a cure and present-day thinkers, scientists and activists show us where and how to find the light at the end of the tunnel.

Waste Junkies takes the viewer on a thrilling cinematic journey that starts in space and then lands in the Atacama desert in Chile, goes north to the pristine but endangered Apache holy grounds at Oak Flats, Arizona, taking a deep dive into the human body through the lens of a microscope at Utrecht University’s toxicology department before washing ashore in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa.

Charismatic characters in all of these places connect the elements, creating an undeniable case for kicking our GDP addiction. One of the most important elements of the film to us, is the aspect of the solutions to the issues we are confronting. Waste Junkies will leave viewers with hope and optimism, knowing that change is realistically possible and within reach and that we can all contribute.

Waste Junkies up to now

Over the past two years a lot of work has been done. We have managed to shoot a substantial part of the film. Many of the key characters have been interviewed and several of the leading scenes have been shot. On top of that, a significant chunk of the research is finished. Renowned international organisations like the Club of Rome, Earth4All and the Hot or Cool Institute endorse the film, which allows us unique access to sources and information that would otherwise be hard to unlock. We produced a 43-minute pilot film and are proud to present the trailer to you on this website.

We are well over the hill and now entering the final phase of production that focuses on shooting a series of interviews and scenes aiming at:

  • turning our unique and unprecedented access to a shocking international waste crime scandal into concrete scenes and interviews.
  • shooting the aspect of the solutions to our GDP addiction and integrating them into the story of Waste Junkies, culminating in scenes that provide the new, healthy narrative for economic growth.
  • Editing and post production.

Waste Junkies is a project that is on track. It has proved that it has huge potential and it’s not just us who are saying that. Your support will help us finalise this project and bring it to millions of viewers around the globe.

Why donate to Waste Junkies?

The most obvious reason to donate is that we can’t wait any longer. Time and time again science proves that we have to change the way we live. And every day we can see and experience the consequences of our current way of living. Our addiction to ‘economic growth’ leads to destruction, or in other words, no growth at all, but collapse. Everything that can be done to tip the scale in a positive direction and change the way we value our economy and our planet, is worthy of our support.

From the days humans sat around campfires onwards, we developed a tradition of storytelling. Stories drive our beliefs and our behaviour; always. Therefore, to bring humanity into a situation where the needs of all are met, within the means of the planet, requires storytelling. Stories told in such a way that they can be remembered, passed on, and solidified in our collective belief and behaviour. This film is made to contribute to just that.

But even though we are in a dire situation, our entire team is well aware of the fact that people need hope. And there is hope. One of the main things that we will be spending your donation on is on that part of the story: where is the light at the end of the tunnel and how can we get there? There is so much knowledge about this out there, but it needs to be told and distributed in a way that sticks. We intend to do that.

So you can see your donation as an urgent, invaluable contribution to a 21st century economy that will allow people and planet to thrive. Waste Junkies, with its global scope and reach, aims for impact in the same way that An inconvenient truth, and Kiss the ground have made impact. Sounds ambitious? Absolutely. But we feel that there is no other way: this type of ambition is now required to achieve our goals. Looking away is not an option for us.
